Note: this entry will be boring and pointless, and many of you won't understand half of it. feel free to skip it, but i felt like writing.

I'm starting to learn to code.

I was wandering around the site yesterday (it's what happens when you're really bored) and I stumbled into an lj_dev post about a code snapshot being updated.

I knew I'd never figure out CVS, so I saw a code snapshot as a way to get into the game without having to worry about a ton of stuff. I didn't really expect to do much with it, so I just downloaded it and started exploring all the little files that everyone forgets about. This includes every thing from http://www.livejournal.com/inc/foobar to a way to test the speed difference between the paid servers and the normal servers, at http://www.livejournal.com/misc/speedtest.bml .

At some point in the day, rho complained about email notifications for requests being moved into her category. At this point, mark decided he'd take control of a bug to fix it on zilla (http://zilla.livejournal.org/502). I agreed to help him out with testing and other stuff, and actually started looking at the code (trouble, I know). He got a patch in while I was out doing errands.

I kept poking around code, and when someone opened a syn zilla bug, I decided I'd try my hand at actually writing a patch. First, I looked around for hours for a diff program on win32 - no go. Then, I just wrote the patch by hand - it looked right, but it wouldn't patch. Finally, I found a diff program that came with wincvs that I had, and wrote a correct patch. Mark applied it to his test server, it worked (hooray!), and I submitted it. (http://zilla.livejournal.org/508) Granted, there were some errors with it, which were corrected by colin, but I still wrote a patch.

I also did screengrabs for 3 S2 styles, as well as submitting a bug that isn't displaying notepad as a selectable S2 style for Free Users. Created a theme for Generator (http://www.livejournal.com/~testish) and just basically goofed around with code all day.

I'm happy. It's fun to actually be doing computer related stuff with LJ. I never thought I'd be able to, but I'm starting to understand, at least a little bit. And goddamnit, it's fun. I like to be doing stuff with this site, and I don't really know why. I don't do support anymore (and yes, I have my reasons, even though they're stupid) and I want to do something.

I feel useful again. I'm also a slob - my room is a mess, I haven't been eating well - and I dont' care, because I'm having FUN again.

Now it's time to go do some stuff in the real world. Tonight, I'm hanging out with Sarah, then on Friday erin's coming over and we'll watch American Beauty. Then, I'll pick up the FPS kids, we'll go out for pie, and come back here and watch a movie.

I'm really happy. I'm looking forward to going back to school. I'm looking forward to a lot of things this semester - like actual programming. And... I still get to be around Sarah for another week. And that's always a good thing.

Happy Thursday everyone ;)
