Trip Report

Trip went well. Currently sitting on the airplane at O'Hare, sleepily typing away on lovely disciplina with my eyes closed.

Flight out was uneventful, which is the best kind of flight. Got up at 4:45, up and out of the house at 5:45, went to the wrong terminal (United instead of American, like I should have) and got over to the right terminal in time. Dad picked me up and took me back to STC, and lay quietly for a couple hours resting. After that, got up and helped clean up in prep for the party today.

Ended up cleaning out a lot of stuff from the basement. Came to the realization that the basement workroom at my parent's house is a lot like the basement at Allston St., with the only real difference being that my father is an organizational freak, so we have a lot more order to the madness. Still, the collections of random boxes from the past 5 years of electronics purchases, the old boxes full of paperwork, the piles of various house-related stuff - it's all the same. If my father were to move out and take all of the stuff that mattered to him, but not the stuff that didn't, the basement would end up the same as the one on Allston.

Picked through some piles of video games that have been rotting in the basement for the past 5 years, and got a decent working Nintendo out of the deal, so I'm coming back to Cambridge with a new working NES we can use with the games we have. Don't know yet if I'll hook it up, but I wanted to take it rather than having it be tossed.

Went to Mary's for dinner, which went okay, then headed to Sarah's, where we watched Dr. Who, played Wii, and watched more Dr. Who. (For those of you who were concerned, I'm working on torrenting Series 1, so that I can watch it before spoilering myself too much more with the Series 3 stuff. Currently have 50% of the 4.5GB torrent.)

Slept late, hung out and finished touches on party prep, people arrived around 1, more people continuing to arrive until I left. Many people asked after Jess's wellbeing, and were suitably sympathetic when I explained she couldn't make it out due to illness.

Got a ride back in my Uncle's Z3 convertible, roof down the whole way. Never ridden in a convertible with the top down before. It's quite nice -- when the kids are gone, I think I'd love to take a fancy two seater convertible up to the White Mountains and go down the Kankamangus or something.

Apparently we are late due to pilots -- currently they're on their way here from another plane. Supposedly taking off in 10 minutes -- we'll see how well that goes.

The guy next to me has an iPhone. I'm positive I don't want one as my primary phone -- lack of tactile response must make typing for texts and the like way more difficult -- but I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't envious of the pretty.

8 minutes til we're supposed to depart, and they haven't made me put my computer away yet. Something tells me we're not going to be leaving at 8.

And, adding to this the next morning: They closed the door about 60 seconds after I wrote that, and we pulled back from the gate at 8 and landed on time. I was impressed. Kristan and Jenn got me from the airport in the shiny detailed Jetta and brought me home, where I slept like a log. Now I've got to wake myself up and head to work.

Life, Family

No school for the girls this week means that they've been around the house (and so have I) more than usual lately. As much as being a parent can be trying, I love having the kids around. They're noisy, rambunctious, and enjoy being kids.

I constantly come out of a work-coma to find that Alicia has been mixing some new drink -- Vampire's Blood or Witches Brew or something similar -- and left a mess all over.

Julie will inform me she did the dishes, and that she only broke two, then let me know that the cats made a mess all over the dining room. (Yesterday, in addition to knocking over a vase full of flowers, the cats also spread printer paper all over the dining room floor. Damn cats.)

I love watching them play, hearing them play, and playing with them.

It's cool to be a dad -- or whatever it is that I am.

Home Sweet Home

Family in town. Did some sightseeing, took them to fire and ice. Behaved ourselves and themselves. Seeing them again tomorrow: funeral/spreading of ashes of my great grandmother.

Very tired. But hoping to hang out with the communistas tonight: the family room is clean enough that I can sit in it without stressing out about the fact that it's a mess, courtesy of our familial preparations.

Kristan found a job. Jess got a callback from the Harvard something or other bar. Jenn has two interviews this week. I've got contract work, and am in communication with old high school/college friend and looking to possibly pick up a piece of some action he's going to be bringing to bear. We may actually be able to afford August rent at this rate ;)

Living in Cambridge is expensive, but worth it. I definitely am looking forward to when I have a little bit less on my mind so that I can take full advantage of the location: dropping down to the pit on weekends or something and checking out what's going on, or hitting up the museums. On that note, we did get our Museum of Science Basic 5 memberships in the mail today, so we can spend time there now. Looking forward to that.

Still no internet: current setup is using the powerbook as a wireless receiver from the somewhat weak unlocked access point which seems to get better reception in the front of the house, then using an ethernet cable to drag that back to the router (atlas) who can then rebroadcast it over ethernet or over wireless to the rest of the house. I fear what will happen when I need to set up our non-wireless computers (zeus, hermes), since I have a feeling neither one of them is going to live anywhere near the router, and neither one of them has any space for a PCI card for wireless. Anyone have any experience with USB->WiFi adapters?

You know what would be cool? Internet over bluetooth: a CAT5->Bluetooth dongle that could rebroadcast from the router to the mac mini... oh, shit. I forgot that it probably wouldn't go that far. I'd have to get that other class of bluetooth device... ah well. It still sounds cool.

The girls love the new house. Jessie loves having our own room, and the free space. Alicia got to come up into the attic and see the space up there last night. The kittens have been doing well and being playful, while not running out of the house much.

I love Jess. She's been extremely tolerant of lots of stress and long hours from me lately, and she's been helpful in everything from getting plates on the car to getting everything we need to survive into the house lately.

I love our roomates. Whenever I've needed help: had the last straw with the kids, needed help moving shit around because I was too exhausted to lift even one foot to go up the stairs, or whatever else needed to be done, they've been there.

I love the girls. They have adapted wonderfully, loving everything from walking everywhere (although Alicia did whine that we never take the car anywhere anymore) to taking the T: Julie announced stops on the red line as the recorded voice did earlier today, and has simply been a joy to have around and be around.

I love this place.

People who want to come over: Please do so! We don't have much in the way of furniture, but we do have some space now, and we have food, and we can just show you how the place is. I like it here, and I'm looking forward to meeting more locals.
